Gene Details
Gene Name 1 |
Dystroglycan 1 |
Gene Summary 1 |
This gene encodes dystroglycan, a central component of dystrophin-glycoprotein complex that links the extracellular matrix and the cytoskeleton in the skeletal muscle. The encoded preproprotein undergoes O- and N-glycosylation, and proteolytic processing to generate alpha and beta subunits. Certain mutations in this gene are known to cause distinct forms of muscular dystrophy. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants, all encoding the same protein. Chromosome 3 |
Locus 1 |
3p21.31 |
Coordinates 1 |
This gene maps to 49506145-49573048 in GRCh37 coordinates. |
Gene Name 2 |
XPC Complex Subunit, DNA Damage Recognition And Repair Factor |
Gene Summary 2 |
The protein encoded by this gene is a key component of the XPC complex, which plays an important role in the early steps of global genome nucleotide excision repair (NER). The encoded protein is important for damage sensing and DNA binding, and shows a preference for single-stranded DNA. Mutations in this gene or some other NER components can result in Xeroderma pigmentosum, a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by increased sensitivity to sunlight with the development of carcinomas at an early age. Alternatively spliced transcript variants have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Aug 2017] |
